The big one

Shot from directly above, a ring of ballerinas in white tutus closes into a near-perfect circle on a ground of vivid red, with a single dancer held at the centre. Their tulle skirts overlap at the edges until the ring reads as one continuous form rather than a group of individuals.

The palette is reduced to two colours doing all the work — white and crimson — and the composition is completely symmetrical, which is what gives the image its stillness despite being built entirely out of moving bodies.
